Essentials, discretionary, savings

Four classes. Color means class. Class changes what the plan prefers when money is short.

A category has no color of its own. It inherits its class, so a hue always means the same thing on every screen.

• Essentials — bills and groceries you cannot skip.
• Discretionary — lifestyle you could trim.
• Savings — money for later.
• Money In — income. Not an envelope on the ledger.

When the month does not balance, Polaris cuts discretionary before essentials, and it will not raid a carried reserve to paper over a restaurant bill. That is the point of classes: the software takes the same side you would take if you were well-rested.
